A Complementary System

The disciplines are distinct, but they can reinforce each other

A broad martial approach

WBTLF does not reduce Myanmar martial traditions to a single competition format. Its approach can include striking, defence, wrestling, weapons practice, technical education and historical transmission.

Standing combat Bando and Lethwei provide different striking frameworks.
Grappling Naban develops grips, throws and control.
Weapons Banshay preserves traditional weapons practice.

WBTLF may establish international technical and sporting references, but each activity must comply with the legislation, sporting regulations, medical requirements and safety rules applicable in the country where the practice or event takes place.

These practices will be documented separately once their current place within the WBTLF technical organization has been formally validated.

Understanding the WBTLF disciplines

Are Bando and Lethwei the same discipline?

No. They are connected through Myanmar martial heritage, but they have distinct technical and sporting identities.

Is Naban only groundwork?

No. Naban includes wrestling elements such as grips, balance, throws, controls and groundwork.

Is Banshay only sword practice?

No. The dha is an important traditional weapon, but Banshay can include several traditional weapon families.

Are the sporting rules identical in every country?

No. WBTLF can provide international references, but practice and competition must respect the legal and sporting framework of each country.

La WBTLF ne réduit pas les traditions martiales du Myanmar à une seule forme de compétition. L’approche peut associer percussion, défense, lutte, armes traditionnelles, formation et transmission historique.
